Superintendent’s Update to Ukiah Unified Families - May 8, 2020

For the last 28 years, I have been planning for my classroom as an English and Leadership teacher, planning for the school year, including multiple school-wide events as a school site Assistant Principal and Principal, and planning for district-wide operations.  We run by bell schedules, school calendars, and many, very well-planned operational and instructional programs.  And at home with three kids, we have spent the last many years running by a schedule of school and after school activities.  Uncertainty is extremely uncomfortable, especially when it comes to the lives of the students we serve.

Despite the uncertainty, we have planned for and served over 3,400 students meals per week, have sent home over 4,000 Chromebooks and 100 hotspots to give our students access to internet and technology they may not otherwise have at home so they can continue their learning, provided remote counseling support, virtual awards assemblies, and worked to stay positive during this uncertain time.  Our teachers shifted from on-site instruction to remote learning in one day, and I have nothing but thanks and gratitude for everything they and the rest of our staff have done to support our students and families.

Next Wednesday is California Day of the Teacher, and the following week is Week of the Classified Employee.  If you have a moment and can write a note to a UUSD employee who has made a difference for your students, we have a box on the backside of 511 S. Orchard Avenue (UUSD District Office) where you can put your handwritten note. We will make sure it gets to the employee you want to thank.  Thank you for helping us appreciate our employees.

And not to be forgotten are our parents and guardians!  We know what you are going through with trying to support your students at home and dealing with all of the personal stressors that are going on in our community right now with this pandemic.  Please make sure you are taking care of yourselves, so you can continue to take care of your family.  We appreciate you so much for everything you are doing at home.

Unfortunately, the uncertainty will continue through the end of the year and possibly into next year.  We are committed to keeping you apprised of any new information as it becomes available or as decisions are made.  We all need to be patient with each other and continue to spread love and kindness in our homes and our communities.  Our hearts go out to those of you who are struggling due to job loss or other stressors.  Please know that we stand ready to help you in whatever way possible!

Remote Learning:  Round 3 begins next Tuesday, May 12, 2020.  There will be no new assignments after May 29, 2020.

Meals on Monday:  Don’t forget to pick up your meals!  We love seeing your mask covered faces!

2020-21 School Year:  Our start date for the 2020-21 school year has not changed and remains August 13, 2020.
