Superintendent’s Update to Ukiah Unified Families - May 22, 2020

20/21 Planning

Educational Program:  We are working on our school programs for 20/21.  There is much uncertainty with what school will look like and what the Public Health orders will allow.  We also know that more families may want independent study and remote learning than have in past years.  For this reason, we have developed a survey that will be sent to you on Wednesday that asks your opinion about different educational programs so we are able to plan for 20/21 based on the choices and options that are best for our families.  Your opinion in no way commits you to a particular program, it just will give us a better idea about how to staff for next year.

Budget: The Governor’s May Revise brought devastating news to the education community.  We are planning for a reduction of over $6 million to our 20/21 budget based on the May Revise.  Thanks to prudent financial planning by our UUSD Board of Trustees and Administration, we will be able to use a portion of our reserve to help us get through 20/21 without major program and staffing reductions.  Please click here to see the UUSD Budget materials presented at yesterday’s special Board meeting.

As we plan for the next school year, we will communicate with you about any new developments or decisions that are made. Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Memorial Day and Meals

There will be no remote learning on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, 2020. Meals will be served the following day on Tuesday, May 26, 2020, and will include five days of meals.

Meals will be served the following week on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, and will include six days of meals, which will take us up to the end of the school year. The Summer Meal Program will start on June 10, 2020. We will provide more details in next week’s communication.

Remote Learning Survey

We value your input! You should have received an invitation to participate in our remote learning survey earlier this week. The information we gather is vital to our understanding of how remote learning is working and what can be improved. Please click here to take the survey.

Last Week of School

The official last day of school is Thursday, June 4, 2020. There will be no issuance of new assignments after Friday, May 29, 2020.  Schools will be in touch with you soon to share their final week of school plans.  If you have any questions, please call your student’s school office, or call our Remote Learning Hotline at 707-472-5003.

Summer School

This year we will offer only the Extended School Year Special Education Program and Cyber High Credit Recovery for high school students.  We will not offer the Summer Bridge program or regular K - 8 summer school.
