Superintendent’s Update to Ukiah Unified Families: August 28, 2020

Let me start by thanking you for your incredible hard work and patience as we begin the 2020-2021 school year. Our goal is to provide the best Distance Learning experience possible for your student. Additionally, we are committed to the social-emotional health of our students. We want to work with families to make sure students feel supported during these challenging times, and everyone has access to the resources they need.

Social-Emotional Support:  If your child is having difficulty dealing with this stressful situation, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for help. You can always view our Social-Emotional and Mental Health Resources here. For children in our Ukiah Unified schools, please call your child’s school or e-mail the school counselors for support. Help with Distance Learning: We have heard from many of you about the positive experiences you have had so far with Distance Learning.  We appreciate your feedback; our teachers are working incredibly hard to support your children during this time. Please reach out immediately if you have any questions or concerns about Distance Learning. If you or your child are having any issues, here is what you can do:

  1. Contact your child’s teacher by phone, email, or through Google Classroom.
  2. Contact your child’s school if you are unable to reach your child’s teacher.
  3. Call our Distance Learning Hotline at 707-472-5003, and we will connect you with the right person or find the information you need.

Distance Learning Tip:  How To Be Successful on Zoom and Google Meet

  1. Make Sure You Have Good Lighting - Great learning needs proper lighting. Natural light is better.
  2. Log In Early - If possible, try to get to your virtual class early to make sure your technology is working, and you have everything you need to be ready for learning.
  3. Pay Attention and Engage - Just like in-person learning.
  4. Use Headphones If Possible - If you have them, it will help you and others in your area concentrate.
  5. Limit Distractions - Close apps, turn off notifications, put your phone on silent, etc.
  6. Mute your Microphone When Not Speaking - This will eliminate background noise and limit distractions.
  7. Dress Appropriately - Dress codes are the same for virtual and in-person instruction.
  8. No Pets - As much as we love them, pets should not participate in Distance Learning.
  9. Beware of Your Environment - Check around you to make sure your area does not have anything that will distract you or other students or might be inappropriate. No music. What’s on your walls? Don’t Zoom in the restroom.
  10. Don’t Say or Do Inappropriate Things - There are serious consequences for inappropriate behavior and imagery - especially online. Disciplinary actions are still a part of Distance Learning.

Recording of Zoom and Google Meet: As many of you know, we are using Zoom and Google Meet as an online meeting platform. We want to inform you of some important information that supports learning and safety during online classroom meetings.

Instruction in your classrooms during Zoom or Google Meet may be recorded for the purposes of instructing absent students or students who need to review instruction for learning purposes. In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, no confidential student information will be included in any recording provided to students for classroom use. Such recordings will be deleted after their educational purpose has concluded.

Instruction in your classrooms during Zoom or Google Meet recordings may also be used for disciplinary purposes. If recordings are used for disciplinary purposes, the recording will become an education record for the involved student, and students not involved in the disciplinary action will have their images blurred/redacted.

Thank you for supporting the children in our community with your kindness, flexibility, and positivity!  Please let us know what you need!  Reach out to your school for more information; they are very busy, so be sure to leave a message or call our District Hotline at 707-472-5003.
