I told teachers and staff recently that I’ve been feeling like a ping pong ball. Conditions and guidelines have changed so frequently and quickly, that just when we seem to have a path forward, things change. What doesn’t change is our commitment to making decisions that are best for our children. As I write this we have been in the red tier for two weeks and have had orange tier numbers for one week. If we can stay in the red tier or lower for another week, we will be eligible to reopen to in-person instruction very soon. Although we may be eligible to reopen on November 12th, we have developed plans for a gradual transition back to in-person instruction. All of this is dependent on Mendocino County staying in the red tier or lower at the time of reopening.

We’ve set our goal, and now we will move toward it. Conditions may change along the way, but we will adapt. We can do this together and safely! Bringing our students safely back to site-based instruction when local health conditions allow is what is best for them. We have a strong well-thought-out plan, with input from our stakeholders, that ensures student and staff safety. Thank you to our staff members and workgroups and our wonderful UTA and CSEA partners for their hard work designing this plan.
There are clear protocols in our plan for scenarios when students or staff test positive, have symptoms, or come into contact with someone who has tested positive. Thank you to our Maintenance and Operations staff for your work to make sure we have more than adequate supplies of PPE and that our schools are safe, clean, and ready for kids. Our teachers are heroes! They have made massive adjustments many times along the way to provide excellent distance learning in response to the pandemic and local health orders. We’re asking them to adjust again, so we’re giving them time. They are creative, dedicated, hard-working professionals that teach and inspire our children during tough times. Please thank them and treat them with compassion, understanding, and love.
There has been a lot of misinformation out there, so please get information from official UUSD channels only like my weekly communications, at www.uusd.net, and on the Ukiah Unified Facebook page.
We are always here for you and your family! Please reach out to your school or call 707-472-5003 if we can help you in any way. Thank you very much for your ongoing support, and I hope you have a great weekend!
