Superintendent’s Update to Ukiah Unified Families March 19, 2021

We have faced so many challenges and changes together in just a matter of 365 days.  Bringing students back on campuses for in-person learning has been challenging. But this challenge is different. It’s not any less stressful or complicated, but what sets this apart is the presence of great joy and hope! Going back to school is pure joy for students, teachers, staff and families! Does this mean we have made it out of the challenges presented by COVID-19?  Unfortunately, the answer is no. Circumstances will change, but each change brings with it hope for the future.

We have successfully started our transition to hybrid learning for grades 7 - 12 which gives me great joy!  For our secondary students, it has been a year since they have been on campus.  Our goal is to maximize our students' time on campus and increase the number of in-person students while accommodating those who still want to do Distance Learning.  I appreciate the flexibility of our staff, students, and families as we bring our students back to campuses.  Schedules and plans may change again before the end of the year as we adjust our transportation routes and respond to any changes in health guidances.  Please continue to remain flexible.

Returning to in-person learning is yet another change for our children. Please have conversations with your kids about their return to in-person learning. Taking time to listen to our kids and allowing them to share their experiences is helpful. Stay calm and offer reassurances. Stressful times like this can be especially tough on children who experience anxiety. Please talk to your kids and make sure they are dealing with the changes in a healthy way, and reach out to your school for additional support if it is needed.

Annual Family Survey - The deadline to complete our family survey is Wednesday, March 24, 2021. We need your feedback to ensure that we continue to provide high-quality, rigorous learning experiences that meet our students' needs, so we have sent out our yearly Family Survey. We value your input and are committed to the academic success of our students! Please click here to take the survey. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and the results will be used to guide our work over the coming years.

COVID-19 Testing - We are excited to offer free COVID-19 Testing for any Ukiah Unified student. COVID-19 Testing is not mandatory, but families are highly encouraged to participate! If you have not registered yet, please do so here. https://www.primarybio.com/a/uusd You will need to know the Student ID number for each child to sign up. We administer 15-minute rapid antigen tests. Students swab their own noses under guidance from District staff.  It is painless, fast and free to our students and staff.

If you need assistance, please first reach out to your child’s school and then call our District Hotline at 707-472-5003.  Thank you very much for everything you do to support our students, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
