Superintendent Kubin’s Update October 22, 2021

Happy Friday, Ukiah Unified! It was so incredible to get back to a little bit of normalcy last weekend with the PumpkinFest! It was just what our community needed! Students and families had so much fun, and the excitement of having a Ukiah Unified booth and seeing so many happy kids was exhilarating. I loved the parade and the soccer kids riding down the street and Ukiah Unified Transportation with their festive bus! Congratulations to our three PumpkinFest Grand Marshals Nokomis Elementary Kindergarten Teacher Amber Walker, Ukiah Unified Food Service Director Julie Beer, and Pomolita Principal Bryan Barrett. I am grateful to the City of Ukiah for honoring our staff and for their tireless work and planning to pull off another fantastic celebration.

As promised by the State, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has reviewed masking requirements in schools and is reaffirming its current approach to COVID-19 prevention in schools. View the CDPH press release and recent California COVID-19 data here.

We continue to have a strong collaboration between local businesses and Ukiah Unified School District to create internships for high school students. Local organizations with interns include Factory Pipe, Ukiah Valley Fire Authority, Hegan Glass Works, Village Books, Redwood Community Services, Sword & Board, Mendo Smiles, Pure Blendz Barbershop, Maverick Enterprises, Inc., and many more. At Big Picture Ukiah, each student is urged and supported to complete a local internship or work closely with a mentor for real-world learning. Email Big Picture Ukiah Dean Erica Gonzalez at [email protected] for more information. Ukiah High School matches students from one of 16 Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways with a local business or mentor in a field connected to their pathway. Email Ukiah High School CTE Coordinator Jonica Vice at [email protected] for more information. We have a growing number of students who have moved on to full-time employment with their internship companies, and we want to continue the success of these great programs.

Join Our Team! We are desperately seeking applicants for substitute teachers, bus drivers, custodians, teaching assistants, food service assistants, and clerical staff. If you or anyone you know wants to start a rewarding career helping our community, please visit EdJoin or Indeed to apply. Help us recruit great people for our students.

I hope you have a great weekend and thank you for all you do to support your child’s education.
