Superintendent Kubin’s Update December 3, 2021

Happy Friday, Ukiah Unified! We only have two more weeks until the 2021 Holiday Break, and it hardly seems possible. To me, it feels like the year just started a few weeks ago. I know it’s easy to get distracted during this time of the year, and I want you to help me urge our students to stay focused and finish strong. Thank you for everything you have done to make this year a success for our students.

Holiday Meal Distribution We are excited to offer ingredients for a free holiday meal to all Ukiah Unified students and any family with a child 18 years or younger at Ukiah High School on Saturday, December 18, from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Food items include a fully-cooked, frozen spiral ham, a bag of potatoes, a bag of apples, a box of stuffing, biscuit mix, cornbread mix or dinner rolls, and milk.

Attendance Is Crucial Now more than ever, children need to attend school every day. Students who miss just 2-3 days each month struggle to keep up. Studies have proven that over time, missing school puts children at a terrible disadvantage academically and socially. It’s harder to learn to read. It’s harder to understand math, and it’ll be much harder to graduate from high school. When possible, we urge families to schedule vacations during school holidays, schedule medical and dental appointments after school, and schedule out-of-town shopping on the weekends. The statistics are clear; missing school means missing out.

After-School Tutoring and Enrichment are available at every school site. Contact your child’s school for more information. Ukiah High School teachers conduct tutoring in the library every day during periods 1, 4, 5, and 8. All subjects are covered, and students just drop in for help. Students in grades 6–12 will soon be able to access online tutoring through tutor.com. More information is coming soon.
