Superintendent Kubin’s Update December 14, 2022

Happy Holidays!  As the end of 2022 approaches, there is much to be proud of in Ukiah Unified!  Thank you so much for sharing your kids with us and for all you do to support their success!  Below are some key pieces of information for the month of December!

Applications Needed for Ukiah Unified School Board Trustee Area 6 Noone ran for Trustee Area 6 in the November 2022 election, so Ukiah Unified Trustees intend to appoint someone to the Ukiah Unified School District School Board. If you live within the boundaries of Area 6, please consider applying to become a Ukiah Unified Trustee. Click here to see if you live in Trustee Area 6.

A school board member’s basic responsibilities include working with the community to establish policies, curriculum, and budget, overseeing facilities, adopting collective bargaining agreements, and employing the superintendent. Simply stated, school boards look out for students. They ensure that kids get the best education possible by influencing where taxpayer money is spent. Click here to read my column where Ukiah Unified Trustee president Zoey Fernandez gives us her perspective on what it’s like to be on the school board and what she sees as the best things about her experience.

If this sounds like you, please get involved! If someone you know would make a great board member, urge them to get involved. Click here to apply or pick up an application by calling or writing to Debbie Ornelas, Office of the Superintendent and Board of Trustees, at 707.472.5002, 511. S. Orchard Ave., Ukiah, CA 95482. The deadline for applications is January 23, 2023.

TK and Kindergarten Registration Opens January 10, 2023 Please visit www.uusd.net starting January 10th and click on the Enrollment Now Open link.

Attendance Is Crucial Now more than ever, children need to attend school every day. Students who miss just 2-3 days each month struggle to keep up. Studies have proven that missing school puts children at a terrible disadvantage academically and socially. It’s harder to learn to read. It’s harder to understand math, and it’ll be much harder to graduate from high school. When possible, we urge families to schedule vacations during school holidays, schedule medical and dental appointments after school, and schedule out-of-town shopping on the weekends.

Free Ukiah Unified Performing Arts Shows All Ukiah Unified students and their families will have free admission to Ukiah Unified performing arts shows again this year. Simply bring your student ID or class schedule, or wear your school spirit shirt to any performing arts show. A big thank you to our Ukiah Unified trustees for allocating the funding to make this happen!
