Superintendent Kubin’s End-of-Year Communication June 8, 2023

Parents and Guardians:

Happy end-of-the-school-year Ukiah Unified! As we approach the end of the year, I want to reflect on our journey together and share some of my thoughts. It has been an eventful year filled with challenges, growth, and collaboration, and I want to thank you, our parents! I am grateful for your support and partnership. Your involvement, through volunteering, attending parent-teacher conferences, attending open houses, or assisting with homework, has significantly impacted our students' success.

Please join me in thanking our teachers, staff, and administrators for their dedication and unwavering commitment! Their passion has created an engaging and supportive learning environment for our students. Community partnerships with The City of Ukiah, SPACE, and The Boys & Girls Club of Ukiah have created student and family success, empowering our students to reach their full potential.

We’ve achieved a lot together this year! We welcomed families back to our fully-open campuses; and enjoyed a full slate of events like the recent UHS Fashion Show. Our comprehensive extracurricular programs and enrichment, including sports, music, arts, and clubs, have fostered a sense of belonging and provided opportunities for students to explore their passions and talents. Ukiah High School athletics earned 12 championship pennants this year. Seven were for athletic championships, and five for academic championships. Let’s celebrate our athletes and scholar-athletes!

Ukiah Unified has revived our visual and performing arts; our choir program is growing, we offer traditional music from Northern Mexico, and six of our students were selected for the Northern California honor band. We offer Pomo language classes at Ukiah High School, and Ukiah Unified has the most extensive Career Technical Education program in Northern California, with 20 pathways. Congratulations to our machine shop and fashion design students who produce equipment used by NASA on the International Space Station.

Summer School begins on June 14th and ends on July 27th. That’s over six weeks of learning and enrichment for our students! Any child who wants to attend the city of Ukiah’s Summer Safari at one of our schools can do so free of charge. If your child attends summer school and Summer Safari, that’s nine hours of daily learning and enrichment for six weeks.

Throughout the summer, you will see changes on many of our campuses. Ukiah Unified will construct new Transitional Kindergarten (TK) stick-built classrooms at Nokomis, Oak Manor, and Yokayo Elementary Schools. Also, Ukiah High School, Big Picture Ukiah @ South Valley High School, Eagle Peak, Pomolita, Oak Manor, Nokomis, and Yokayo will all get new security fencing.

Over the break, don’t forget to read with your kids! Get outside and be active! The California Department of Parks and Recreation has created the California State Park Adventure Pass. Fourth-grade students can receive free admission to all 19 state parks until August 31, 2023.

I am grateful for your trust, partnership, and continued involvement in your children's education. Please maintain open lines of communication with your child’s school and actively participate in your child's academic journey. Contact your child’s school with any questions or concerns, and have a great summer. We look forward to seeing you on August 21st for the first day of the 2023-24 school year!

Sincerely,

Superintendent Deb Kubin
